Regional Circular Bioeconomy & Sustainable Resource Management: Highlights from Beyond2Festival 2024

On June 30, 2024, BioBASE and alchemia-nova hosted RURBANIVE workshops on circular bioeconomy and sustainable resource management during the Beyond2Festival in Wolfersdorf, Lower Austria. This green event, attended by 250 participants, emphasized environmental sustainability, local initiatives, arts, and music. It provided an ideal platform for BioBASE and alchemia-nova to present their circular economy initiatives, particularly within the EU-funded RURBANIVE project.

Workshop 1: Promoting Regional Circular Bioeconomy & Sustainable Food Preparation

Alchemia-nova, a leading Austrian research institute in the bioeconomy sector, conducted a workshop focused on promoting the regional circular bioeconomy and showcasing sustainable food preparation methods. The workshop aimed to educate participants on the synergy between rural and urban producers and practical ways to integrate circular economy principles into daily life. Attendees included a diverse group of individuals aged 25 to 45 from Vienna.

Interactive Vegan Pizza Preparation with Locally Sourced Ingredients

Participants engaged in an interactive vegan pizza preparation activity, using locally sourced ingredients. This hands-on experience underscored the importance of supporting local food systems and reducing food waste, key components of a sustainable circular economy.

Learning about Circular Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems

The session covered essential concepts of the circular bioeconomy and presented successful case studies. Participants explored how collaboration between rural and urban food producers can lead to the creation of sustainable food systems.

Workshop 2: Introducing BioBASE Compass for Sustainable Resource Management

BioBASE, recognized for its expertise in the Austrian bioeconomy network, organized a workshop to introduce and gather feedback on the BioBASE Compass, a tool designed to visualize material flows and support the development of circular strategies. The workshop drew eight participants, aged 25 to 45, from Vienna.

Engaging Key Stakeholders in Circular Food Economy

The workshop brought together representatives from various circular food economy stakeholders, fostering collaborative discussions on sustainable practices and the role of the BioBASE Compass in managing waste-to-value chains.

Demonstrating the BioBASE Compass: A Tool for Circular Economy Success

The BioBASE Compass was showcased as a crucial tool for managing circular resource flows. Participants learned how the tool aids in transforming food waste into valuable resources, enhancing the sustainability of local initiatives.

Teaching Circular Thinking: EU Sustainability Regulations and the Circular Bioeconomy

The session also highlighted the importance of circular thinking in line with recent EU sustainability regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU Taxonomy. Attendees gained insights into how these regulations impact the implementation of circular economy practices.

Raising Awareness about the RURBANIVE Project’s Goals

Both workshops aimed to raise awareness of the RURBANIVE project’s objectives, which include fostering the integration of rural and urban bioeconomy practices to support sustainability efforts.

Key Features of an Effective Circular Economy Tool

During the workshop discussions, the following features were identified as critical for the effectiveness of a circular economy tool like the BioBASE Compass:

  • Transparency and Traceability: Tools must provide comprehensive information on materials, ensuring transparency in sourcing, processing, and disposal.
  • Data Integration: Effective tools should integrate with existing data systems, offering real-time insights into sustainability performance.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Facilitating connections between stakeholders in the value chain is essential for successful circular strategies.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: Tools should be scalable and adaptable to the needs of different sectors within the bioeconomy.
  • Compliance with EU Regulations: Tools must align with CSRD and EU Taxonomy requirements, offering clear metrics and reporting capabilities.
Outcomes and Feedback: Enhancing Circular Economy Tools

The interactive nature of the workshops provided participants with the opportunity to offer valuable feedback on the BioBASE Compass and the circular food concepts presented by alchemia-nova. This feedback highlighted the tool’s potential to enhance industry connections, understand material streams, and develop innovative pathways for managing secondary resource streams.

Conclusion & Outlook: The Future of Circular Bioeconomy Tools

The workshops at Beyond2Festival 2024 successfully demonstrated the practical applications of the BioBASE Compass and the significance of circular thinking. The insights gained will be integrated into the further development of the tool, ensuring it meets the diverse needs of stakeholders.

As a next step, BioBASE held a mini-workshop on July 17, 2024, to delve deeper into the challenges that the BioBASE Compass seeks to address, utilising Design Thinking methodology. By fostering stakeholder collaboration and providing practical solutions, the BioBASE Compass is set to play a pivotal role in advancing the circular bioeconomy.
